Evinrude 70
07/29/10 10:36 AM

I have a outboard marked "Evinrude 70" on the engine cover.
The model # on the mount is 70ESL74M, which is apparently a 1974 Johnson model number.
Are there any numbers on the engine itself that I can use to identify it?
If so, where? If not, how do I identify the year and model of this motor?

Thanks,
-Roy

That is a 1974 70hp according to the model #. Sometimes the same # will be stamped into a welch plug on the power head.

What's confusing me is the Evinrude website has a model number reference list which lists this as a Johnson, not an Evinrude. I'm wondering if somewhere along the way someone replaced the Evinrude transom bracket (where I got the number), with one off a Johnson. Do you know where on the engine the welch plug is located?

Thanks,
-Roy

Found the welsh plug and the number on it is an Evinrude number, 70473M.
Apparently, someone did swap out the transom bracket.
Thanks for the help guys!

You may find the Bombadier website helptful in the future: http://epc.brp.com
The powerhead is also a 1974, if you haven't figured that out yet. Maybe your motor was put together on a Monday, and someone stuck a Johnson transom bracket on the Evinrude powerhead.
